Vinyl shower curtains are commonly used in households because of their many advantages. They are extremely durable, practical, and are available in decorative designs, patterns, and colors. They are comparatively cheaper than other shower curtains.
If you have already installed a vinyl shower curtain in your bathroom, you need to follow certain cleaning methods in order to make it last longer. Soap scum or films, dirt, molds, or mildew are the elements that spoil the shower curtain. If you do not want to replace your shower curtain, here are a few tips to make it appear new and fresh.

Cleaning Tips

Just because vinyl curtains are water-resistant and meant for daily use does not mean that you should not clean them regularly. Before beginning any cleaning methods, make sure you remove the shower curtain from the hook.
  • Washing with warm water is the best method of cleaning shower curtains. Spread the curtain flat on the surface and clean it with warm water while scrubbing with a soft sponge.
  • Mild soaps or detergents can be used for cleaning. Remove the curtain and soak it in soap water for some time. After a few minutes, take it out, rinse with water, and let it dry.
  • If washing it in a washing machine, you can add a cup of bleach or baking soda with your regular detergent.
  • It is advisable to clean vinyl shower curtain in warm water rather than cold water, as cold water can stiffen it.
  • Use hydrogen peroxide for cleaning dirt spots on the curtain. Put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and rub in circular motion. The spots are cleaned due to bleaching properties of hydrogen peroxide.

Maintenance Tips

  • Make saltwater mixture and soak the shower curtain in it for some time. This will protect it from mold and mildew. You can also soak the curtain in vinegar to prevent mold and mildew invasion.
  • You can spray vinyl curtains with disinfectants to keep mold and mildew away.
  • Never put vinyl curtains in washing machine when it is switched to 'hot' mode. Never dry them in the dryer. Both these practices can burn the curtains.
  • Also, while cleaning shower curtains in a washing machine, do not clean it individually, you can add a few towels or blankets along with it and then run the machine on a gentle cycle.
  • If you notice that your shower curtain has torn near the hook, you can easily fix it at home with the repair kit.
  • When not in use, you should keep the curtain tied at the side or top.
  • In the worst case, if you find that your shower curtain is too much spoiled by mold or mildew, you will have to change it, as it is the only way out.
Vinyl shower curtains can be cleaned at home with these easy home remedies. Regular cleaning and maintenance will definitely be helpful to retain your favorite shower curtain and also save a few dollars.
