Portable Air Compressors, Coolers, and Purifiers

Ranjan Shandilya
From hand fans to portable air coolers, technology is here to stay. Read this story to know how far technology has advanced with portable air compressors, coolers, and purifiers.
Development of technology knows no boundaries and the dissatisfaction or laziness of human race has given rise to many luxuries. So much so that now these amenities have become an addiction. Air is freely available and we have developed so many wonderful equipment of high utilitarian value that our life becomes so much simpler.

Portable Air Compressors

An air compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure by decreasing the volume. As the pressure increases, the temperature also increases proportionately. A portable compressor is required when we need to work with some of the following tools:
  • Air bags
  • Air chisels
  • Air motors
  • Air wrenches
  • Paint guns
  • Blow molding tools.
While looking for one, it is important to decide the volume of compressed air that you will require, as this will help you decide on the capacity of the compressor. Also, approximately 10% of the air is wasted due to air leaks and that must also be considered. Hence, it is always advisable to buy one that is oversized.
Also, the power source should be one of the most important factors to consider before buying. There are so many varieties of compressors available in the market, each of them offering a large number of capacities and accessories, that it is easy to get confused. They are usually available at stores that sell automobile tools. The smaller varieties, which are less than 1 horse power, ideal for non commercial purposes, are available in the price range of $30 - $50, and these are more popular because they can offer a wide range of features.

Portable Air Coolers

When it is hot and sultry, a portable cooler sounds like a dream come true. With continuous advancement in technologies, such coolers have become state-of-the-art electric equipment, that are very convenient and cost-effective, well suited for areas where it is hot and the humidity is low. They use the principle of evaporative cooling. Evaporative cooling works via heat absorption by moisture evaporation.
Hence, evaporative coolers draw the exterior air into a pad that is soaked in water, cools the air by evaporation, and finally circulates it back. Portable coolers provide substantial energy saving as compared to AC units, not to mention that they are far cheaper and can be moved anywhere in the house as per convenience. Further, their maintenance is also very low.

Portable Air Purifiers

Like the food that we eat and the water that we drink, the air that we breathe greatly impacts our health. Mother Nature has provided us with an immense wealth of trees and plants that clean and purify air.
Sadly, with the number of industries spewing out smoke and poisonous gases growing everyday, we need to have man-made purifiers, especially around the young, the old, and the sick. Portable purifiers are available in large numbers today.
The larger varieties help in cleaning the air in a small area like our house from most allergen, bacteria, pollen, dust, and much more. The smaller ones can be worn around the neck that ensures that the air that we breathe in is pure and free from dust and diseases.
The various types are:
  • Ionizers which clean by imparting negative charge to the particle.
  • Electronic air cleaners, which remove dust articles by electrostatic precipitation.
  • HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absolute) cleaners remove particles by mechanical filtration and diffusion.
Also, some purifiers come with a combination of the above features.
Further, most machines are automated, consist of auto mode to check the air excellence, and amplify the performance when the pollutants in the air are higher. These devices are highly recommended for offices, homes, computer and pathological laboratories, where cleanliness is a key factor for equipment operation.
We may be proud of our technological advancement, however, the fact remains that we don't have fresh air to breathe, which is indeed subject of concern for all of us. It is imperative to plant more trees and try in every possible way to cut down the air pollution.
