Natural Stainless Steel Cleaner

Ashwini Kulkarni Sule
Steel is an alloy which truly rules your kitchen. From tableware to sinks, and from utensils to appliances; it is used everywhere. Though it is very low on maintenance, it requires periodic cleaning to retain its sparkle.
The name 'stainless steel' is not just for the sake of it. This alloy can simply resist any kind of stain. Corrosion resistance, and anti-rust, are some of its properties that make it a favorite option for kitchenware. It is strong, durable, and virtually damage-proof.
However, certain impurities can pose problems for the otherwise invincible alloy. However, these stains can be easily removed by using various cleaning products. Some of the natural ingredients that can be effectively used for cleaning stainless steel are:

Lemon

Lemon is one of the strongest food acids and fights effectively against home bacteria. Use a spoonful of lemon juice to clean the steel utensils. Lemon helps to get rid of the grime and grease. Besides cleaning, it also acts as a deodorizing agent; rendering a fresh smell to the utensils. Similarly other acidic foods like tomato and tamarind can also be used as cleaning agents.

White Vinegar

This is the most useful natural stainless steel cleaner. Soak a cloth in white vinegar and use it to clean the utensils and cutlery. It is particularly effective in clearing the heat stains. It also removes grease and odor from the steel and sanitizes it.

Olive Oil

Dirty dishes in the sink leave spots and stains on it. They can be best cleaned using olive oil. Olive oil also removes fingerprints from the steel and adds sparkle to it.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can be used as water softener in hard water areas. It softens the water, thereby easing the cleaning process. It also helps to remove smudges and grime. Apply baking soda to the utensils and keep it for few hours to get rid of rust spots.

Washing Soda

Washing soda is similar to baking soda. It is a great fix for streaks and it cuts down on grease.

Cream of Tartar

Cream of tartar is used for cleaning stubborn rust stains. Mix ΒΌ cup of cream of tartar with 2 spoonfuls of lemon juice, and apply it to your flatware. Rub the stains with a soft brush to remove the rust spots completely.

Cornstarch

Cornstarch adds glitter to stainless steel by removing old stains and smudges. Mix cornstarch and water to form a paste and apply to stained flatware. Allow it to dry and then wipe it using a dry cloth.
You can also combine the above ingredients to clean your kitchenware. Regular cleaning of utensils with natural stainless steel cleaners help to get rid of stains and rust and prevents corrosion of steel. It is also important to follow safe cooking practices to protect your kitchenware from untimely staining.
