Making Your Own Loveseat Slipcovers

Reshu Mehrotra
Tired of seeing that old slipcover on your favorite loveseat. Well, you know it's time to go for a change. Why waste money in buying a slipcover when you can easily make it in your home and add aesthetic appeal to your loveseat. Read on to stitch a beautiful cover.
This British two-seater couch popularly known as 'Loveseat' is probably the most seen in apartments, condos and houses. This comfortable seating is a perfect retreat for people to enjoy their hot coffee on a snow laden evening or cold coffee on a hot summer day.
Of course, covering your couch with covers guarantees a long life and keeps it safe from any mess done by your children or pets. While choosing the cover, it's important to choose a fabric that is medium in weight because it will help the fabric stay over your couch.
Heavy or light fabric will either make your couch look bulky or will slip out from it. Though you can also cover your couch with a loose fitting fabric, it would neither fit properly nor make you like the quality of your work.

Method to Design a Slipcover

Prior to starting on the sewing machine, it is important to follow certain steps in order to make a perfect loveseat cover:
  • First start measuring the length and width of the cushions and measure the backside of the cushion too in order to accurately order the material. It's important to remember to add extra inches to the hem.
  • Even while measuring the backside you can either add another cloth as one piece so as to hold the cushions together or leave the cushions separately.
  • After the measurement it's time to pick up your perfect color and material of the fabric. Remember to choose a fabric which can be easily maintained and at the same time be trendy.
  • While using any vertical or rectangular pattern fabric it's important to coordinate the design properly with your couch.
  • When you are done with choosing the material, cut the pieces according to measurement. Leaving a few extra inches is better as it can act as a backup while sewing.
  • Before you start to sew you can also mark the measurements with pins so as to help you in accurate stitching.
  • While sewing the hem you can insert small pieces of PVC pipes which will help your slipcover from slipping at the back of the cushions.
  • After you have stitched the pieces together cover your cushion to see if it's fitting perfectly. It probably might be loose but then you can stitch it to fit the cushion perfectly.
  • You can add a zip to the lower portion of the cushion which can be helpful while removing and cleaning.
  • The front portion of the loveseat can also be sewn in similar pattern if you have cushions attached to it. If you want to leave some cloth at the back part of the loveseat you can measure the backside and allow the fabric to fall down.
  • You can then tie some decorative pieces contrasting your fabric to the loveseat so as to make it look beautiful.
  • Next comes the armrests. Measure the armrests height vertically on both the sides and horizontally too. The height on both the sides should be kept same because the other end will be tucked inside the crevice. While measuring do keep an extra inch for hemlines.
  • Start stitching at the bottom and sew all the pieces together. Place it on the armrests and let the free fabric fall towards the floor. You can also tie the excess fabric with ribbons or strips matching the fabric.
  • At one of the side you can machine stitch a magazine holder from the same fabric. This will make your slipcover look more useful.
Remember to leave extra inches while stitching at first. Once you put the covers on the couch and it's the replica of your thinking you can further make improvements by sewing a second line so as to secure your stitching.
If you go to buy these slipcovers you end up shelling around $100 and above to get good quality. But in your home you can stitch them under $100 and have your own choice of fabric and design.
Slipcover designs range from simple covers to custom fit depending on your couch design. Designing your own one really creates enthusiasm and excitement. After you have stitched the slipcover and covered your precious loveseat, it's time to sit and enjoy your time with your loved ones.
