How to Clean a Marble Tabletop

Azmin Taraporewala
Having a stained marble tabletop hints at your laziness about cleaning the house and maintaining hygiene, and if your mother shows up unannounced, you are up for some intense lecturing. Let's see how to avoid this situation.
Marble is immensely popular and adorned by many as a flooring option in their house. The stone that is used for tiling purposes can also be employed for tabletops. Salt, iron, and silt create a veining pattern, making marble all the more attractive as a tabletop. However, the attractive appeal will stay if it is maintained well. Here are a few easy-to-follow steps to give it a long life and make it look beautiful.

The Cleaning Drill

  • You must clean the marble top with a towel soaked in hot water. Make sure that you re-soak or blot excess water on the table. If you ignore it, you may notice that the surface has developed scars where water droplets appear to have been dragged.
  • Another way would be by making a poultice by dampening a cleaning material that works as an absorbent. You must apply the paste on the tabletop for an hour. If the stains are extremely rigid, you could leave it on for about 48 hours to get rid of the stain totally. Continue to dampen the poultice and do not let it dry completely.
  • If you accidentally drop some melted butter that you had prepared to add to the bread pudding, here's the method to fix it. Sprinkle cornstarch in abundance on the marble surface and then use a brush to spread the powder. Leave the surface for at least 24 hours. After that, scrub the stain with hot water, some detergent, and a brush. Wipe the surface further with a cloth that is made damp with ammonia solution.
  • You may try to make a poultice with acetone or amyl acetate and spread it on the stain to get done with stains left behind by creams and lotions.
  • If rust stains are the cause of your worry, you could use a rust stain remover solution directly on the surface.
  • If your marble surface requires to be polished, you could use putty powder or tin oxide to revamp the look. You may rub this solution with a damp cloth and use an electric polish for the purpose of buffing.

Doing it the Right Way

  • Do not scrub the marble surface regularly with the solution and poultice recipes given above. The marble will lose its shine and luster.
  • Always use mats on the dinner table when you know you have guests coming. Make use of coasters to place glasses if you plan to offer beverages. This will avoid the rings that are formed when glasses are placed on the table.
  • Preferably, clean up the surface immediately if it sustains any marks or stains. Allowing the stain to stay, may give it a chance to develop into a tougher one that may fade eventually, but leave a mark behind.
  • Avoid air-drying the marble surface as it may make the surface look dull. Dry the top with a soft cloth with circular motions.
  • Do not use chemicals or spark any flammable objects on the surface.
  • Do not leave acidic substances on the surface for too long as doing so may etch the surface.
Maintaining the table is easy and that would increase its lifespan. It is suggested to keep acidic items away, as they may leave stains which are difficult to be removed.
The most common items we use regularly and could add to the stains are tomatoes, salad dressings, ketchup, and wine. So ensure that you wipe off the stain immediately if the kids have dropped some ketchup while being playful or if you have dropped some wine after having too many glasses.
