Buying Guide for Energy Efficient Appliances

Maya Pillai
Many of us are not aware about the energy consumption of the appliances we use. It not only makes a dent in your savings, but could also lead to air pollution and global warming. Here are some tips to consider before buying energy efficient appliances.
Reports and studies have revealed, on an average, the everyday use of energy in our homes causes more pollution than a car. One of the main reasons is that the energy consumed in homes is generated by power plants which burn fossils. One of the ways homes could cut down on the contribution towards air pollution is by using energy efficient gadgets and appliances. This could reduce, not only the air pollution, but also energy bills.

Useful Tips

Saving energy means saving money. If you are planning to buy any home appliance, here are a few useful suggestions.
Take time out to inquire about the amount of energy an appliance you are planning to buy would consume. Even if you have to spend more money on buying a particular model, you would be saving money on your utility bill.
Remember, from outside, all appliances look the same. Before making a purchase, determine the space an appliance would occupy in your home or office. For instance, if you are buying a refrigerator, make sure there is enough space to open the door properly. Hence, keep in mind the size and style of the appliance before making a deal.
Read the yellow and black energy guide label. This label is attached to most of the latest appliances, and it is mandatory. This label will display the amount of energy consumed by the appliance annually. You could compare the efficiency of the appliance of various brands. Many brands give cash rebates to promote their goods, and also to encourage people to buy appliances that consume less energy.

What are Energy Star Appliances?

An international standard was set for the energy efficiency of appliances, including consumer products, by the United States in 1992. This standard is known as 'Energy Star'. This program was adopted by nations such as Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan, Australia, and the European Union.
The US Environment Protection Agency, along with the US Department of Energy, created a label known as 'Energy Star'. This was done to help consumers save money on energy bills, and also minimize pollution.
A few of the appliances on which the logo of 'Energy Star' can be found are refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioners, washing machines and dryers. An appliance is rated as energy efficient if the energy required by it is less than the minimum energy set by the government agencies. Such appliances are awarded 'Energy Star' symbols.
A few appliances accounting for 20 percent of energy consumption include, a refrigerator, washing machine and dishwasher. However, if you were to purchase an energy efficient refrigerator, the energy consumption would be less than a continuously running 75-watt bulb. Hence, it is wise to purchase a refrigerator with a 'Energy Star' symbol.
A front-opening washing machine could be a bit expensive as compared to a top-opening washing machine. However, the water and energy consumption is less in comparison.
You could save money by replacing old appliances with new energy saving appliances. You are not only saving on your energy bills, but also minimizing pollution.
